Etymology: < the genitive of dog n.1 + head n.1In quot. 1539 at sense 1 after Hellenistic Greek κεϕαλὴ κυνὸς (Septuagint), itself after Hebrew rō'š kālaḇ, both lit. ‘head of a dog’. In sense 1 occasionally translating ancient Greek κυνώπης , lit. ‘dog-eyed’ (see cynopic adj.); compare quot. 1676 at sense 1. In quot. 1949 at sense 1 after Chinese gǒutóu, a common term of abuse in Chinese literature ( < gǒu dog + tóu head). In sense 2 after classical Latin cynocephalus (see cynocephalus n.). With sense 3 compare classical Latin canis (see Canis n.) and canīcula (see canicule n.) in this sense. Attested earlier as a surname: Robertus Doggisheued (1204).
