Forms: 1900s– dongchimi, 1900s– tongchimi, 1900s– tongch'imi.
Origin: A borrowing from Korean. Etymon: Korean dongchimi.
Etymology: < Korean dongchimi (also transliterated as tongch'imi) < dong winter ( < Middle Chinese) + chimi (kind of) kimchi, so called because it was prepared to be stored and eaten in winter.
In Korean cuisine: a type of kimchi made with radish and typically also containing napa cabbage, spring onions, green chilli, and pear, traditionally eaten during winter. Cf. kimchi n.In quot. 1962 referring to a dish made with turnip instead of radish as a main ingredient.

1992 Korea Times (Electronic ed.) 16 Dec. The spiced chicken is a special Korean barbecue recipe cooked in a sweet and sour sauce which is served with dongchimi, tangy, pickled radish.
2020 South China Morning Post (Nexis) 18 Dec. I eat dongchimi with roasted or steamed sweet potatoes when it's really cold. It's a very familiar combination in Korea.
