Etymology: Apparently < Old French, Middle French alumeur (1321; < Old French alumer to light, illuminate (see allumine v.) + -eur -eur suffix), with remodelling of the suffix after -er suffix¹.Alternatively, the passage in quot. a1350 has been interpreted as showing either a transmission error for a louere (on the basis of the later variant reading: see lover n.² and the variants cited at that entry) or a transmission error for almnere , an otherwise apparently unattested Middle English variant of almoner n.² (compare alumner and later almner at almoner n.² α. forms).
