Etymology: < French alumine (L. B. Guyton de Morveau 1782, Observ. sur la Physique 19 378) < classical Latin alūmin- , alūmen alum n.1, after French -ine -ine suffix4. With later use compare -ine suffix5. Compare slightly later alumina n. and the discussion at that entry.Compare the following earlier example (with uncertain sense, but probably too early to denote alumina), which could alternatively be interpreted as either showing a variant of alumen n. or being formed independently < alum n.1 + -ine suffix4:1682 A.
