Etymology: Old English dufedoppa , < dúfan to dive, duck + doppa, agent-noun < ablaut stem déop- , déap- , dup- (dop- ) to dip: compare dop-enid dipping-duck, coot, dop-fugel dipping-fowl, diver; also the derivative verb doppettan to dip often. The first element appears to have been changed to dyve- when the strong form of the verb became obsolete: see dive n. Some later forms are due to ‘popular etymology’.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈdive-dap.
