单词 aluminium
释义

aluminiumn.adj.

Brit. /ˌal(j)ᵿˈmɪnɪəm/, U.S. /ˌæləˈmɪniəm/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: alumine n., -ium suffix; aluminum n.
Etymology: In quot. 1811 apparently < alumine n. + -ium suffix, after other names of elements (e.g. potassium n., magnesium n.), probably as an alteration of alumium n. In later use an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -ium suffix) of aluminum n., after other names of elements (compare quot. 1812).Quot. 1811 at sense A. 1 is a review of a lecture by H. Davy delivered in 1809 and published in 1810 ( Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 100 16–74). The published paper, on which the review appears to be based, does not name the new substance created by the experiments described; the ingredient alumina is referred to in the form alumine (see alumine n.). Compare (from a related paper) quot. 1808 at alumium n. aluminium n. coexisted with its synonym aluminum n. throughout the 19th cent. From the beginning of the 20th cent., aluminum gradually became the predominant form in North America; it was adopted as the official name of the metal in the United States by the American Chemical Society in 1925. Elsewhere, aluminum was gradually superseded by aluminium, which was accepted as international standard by IUPAC in 1990.
A. n.
1. A silvery-grey metallic chemical element, atomic number 13, which is comparatively light in weight, strong, and corrosion-resistant, and is widely used (esp. in the form of alloys) in manufacturing and construction. Symbol Al.Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and is obtained mainly from bauxite. It is a constituent of many rocks in the form of aluminosilicates. Major uses for aluminium metal include aircraft and vehicle bodywork, frames and other structural parts, containers, household appliances, utensils, etc. Aluminium powder is used in paint and pyrotechnics (cf. thermite n.).
