单词 doiter
释义

doiterv.

Brit. /ˈdɔɪtə/, U.S. /ˈdɔɪdər/, Scottish English /ˈdɔɪtər/, Irish English /ˈdɒɪtər/
Forms: 1700s– doiter, 1900s– doither (Irish English (northern)).
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English doit , dote v.1, -er suffix5.
Etymology: < Scots and English regional (northern) doit, in similar senses (variant of dote v.1) + -er suffix5. Compare earlier dotter v., which is etymologically unrelated, although the two words may have influenced one another. It is uncertain whether Scots ditter , attested in sense 2, shows a variant of this word, or a synonym of imitative origin, similar to dotter v. and totter v.
Scottish, Irish English (chiefly northern), and English regional (northern).
