Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: alumnus n., novitiate n.
Etymology: Apparently < alumnus n. + -iate (in novitiate n.). In quot. 1879 probably influenced by German Alumniat (1811 or earlier), alteration of Alumnat boarding house of a school or seminary (18th cent.) < post-classical Latin alumnatus (first half of the 17th cent.) < classical Latin alumnus alumnus n. + -ātus -ate suffix1.
The period during which a person is a pupil or student. Also: the fact or quality of being an alumnus.
