Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Allosaurus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Allosaurus, genus name (O. C. Marsh 1877, in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 114 515) < allo- allo- comb. form + -saurus -saurus comb. form. The animal was so called because its vertebrae were different from those of other dinosaurs known at the time of its discovery.
Palaeontology.
A genus of theropod dinosaurs which were large bipedal carnivores, known from remains in late Jurassic deposits found chiefly in North America; (also allosaurus) a dinosaur of this genus.
