Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἀλλότριος , -morphic comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀλλότριος belonging to another (see below) + -morphic comb. form, after German allotriomorph ( H. Rosenbusch Mikrosk. Physiogr. der massigen Gesteine (1886) i. 11).Ancient Greek ἀλλότριος is < ἄλλος other (see allo- comb. form) + an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of -τερος , comparative suffix (see other adj.) + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives.
Mineralogy.
= xenomorphic adj. at xeno- comb. form . Contrasted with idiomorphic adj. Cf. anhedral adj.
