Forms: 1600s dutchin, 1600s– dotchin, 1700s dodgeon, 1700s dot-chin, 1800s dodging.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Chinese.
Etymology: Apparently < a compound or phrase in a southern variety of Chinese, perhaps compare (Wu: Ningpo) da ts'ing steelyard < da large, great (Mandarin ) + ts'ing scales (Mandarin chèng); compare Malay dacin. Compare ( < a similar source) Portuguese †dachém, †dachen, †dachim (1532; now achém).
Somewhat rare.
A balance used in China and East Asia, consisting of a beam with arms of unequal length, and having a scale suspended from the shorter arm and a counterpoise which can slide along the longer arm (which is notched or graduated).The dotchin is similar in form and use to a steelyard (steelyard n.2).In quot. 1685 perhaps used as an allusive reference to trade.
