Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Latin abacus.
Etymology: < classical Latin abacus abacus n., after French abaque (1845: see note). Compare earlier (in more general sense) abacus n. Compare also earlier (in different sense) aback n.French abaque in this sense is apparently earliest used in L. Lalanne Description et Usage de l' Abaque (1845); in an English translation of Lalanne's work in 1846, abacus is used to translate French abaque.
Now rare.
A type of nomogram in which the required value is determined by use of a ruler or other straight edge.
