Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abaca.
Etymology: < French abaca Manila hemp (1664; later also denoting the banana plant producing this fibre (1782)) < Tagalog abaká Manila hemp, the plant producing this fibre (partly transmitted into various European languages via Spanish abacá Manila hemp (1667)).
A kind of banana plant, Musa textilis, native to the Philippines, the petioles of which yield a strong fibre. Also: the fibre itself, used for making paper, ropes, matting, etc.; Manila hemp.
