单词 dotterel
释义

dottereln.1adj.

Brit. /ˈdɒtərəl/, /ˈdɒtrəl/, U.S. /ˈdɑdərəl/, /ˈdɑtrəl/, Scottish English /ˈdɔtərəl/, /ˈdɔtrəl/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, dotterels.
Forms: late Middle English dotrelle, late Middle English–1500s dotterelle, late Middle English–1500s dottrelle, late Middle English–1600s dottrell, 1500s doteryll, 1500s–1600s doterel, 1500s–1600s doterell, 1500s–1600s dotrel, 1500s–1600s dotrell, 1500s–1600s dotterell, 1500s–1600s dottrill, 1500s–1800s dotteril, 1500s–1800s dottrel, 1500s– dotterel, 1600s dotril, 1600s dotterrel, 1600s dottril, 1600s–1700s dotrill, 1600s–1800s dotterill; also Scottish 1800s dothrel, 1800s dottrell; Newfoundland 1800s dodtrel.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: dote v.1, -rel suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < dote v.1 + -rel suffix; compare cockerel n., and also mongrel n., pickerel n.1 Compare dot plover n.It is unclear whether sense A. 1a or sense A. 2 is the original sense. The former appears to be more frequent, and at least in some cases the latter is treated as showing an extended use of it. The bird appears to be so called on account of its trustingness or naivety (compare the etymological note at morinel n.), hence the underlying semantic motivation is probably much the same for both senses.
A. n.1
1.
a. A small Eurasian migratory plover, Charadrius morinellus, which has brown and black streaked plumage with a broad white eye-stripe.Also called dot plover.Dotterels often allow close approach by humans, and have therefore been said to be ‘tame’ or ‘trusting’. See note in etymology, and with sense A. 2 cf. the similes in quots. 1611, 1769.
