Etymology: < Dr n.1 + feel-good n.The form Doctor Feelgood shows substitution of the full form doctor n. Dr. Feelgood seems to have been first used as a simple self-designation (without any of the later negative connotations) by the blues pianist ‘Piano Red’ (William Perryman) who broadcast, and subsequently recorded, under this sobriquet; compare:1962 ‘Piano Red’ (title of record) Dr. Feelgood and the Interns.The expression was popularized by Aretha Franklin's 1967 hit song of that name, in which Dr. Feelgood is used as an affectionate nickname for the singer's lover, with allusion to his sexual prowess; compare:1967 A. Franklin & T. White Dr. Feelgood (transcribed from song, perf. A.
