Etymology: Ultimately < the name of Dr. Klaus Maertens (1915–88), German medical doctor, inventor (with Dr. Herbert Funck, Luxembourg-born engineer) of a type of air-cushioned rubber sole first manufactured in Germany in 1948 and subsequently licensed for use in the United Kingdom to R. Griggs and Co. of Wollaston, Northamptonshire, who used soles of this type on boots from April 1960.Shoes with this type of sole made in Germany during the 1950s were marketed as Dr. Maertens Luftpolsterschuh; the anglicized spelling Dr. Martens was used on packaging and advertisements for R. Griggs and Co.'s products from 1960. Compare:1963 Coventry Evening Tel. 21 Feb. 3/4 (advt.) ‘Astronauts’ with the new Dr. Marten's Sole.1977 Trade Marks Jrnl. 23 Mar. 599/1 Dr. Martens... Use claimed from the year 1965... 998,025 Soles for boots and for shoes. Ing. Herbert Funck and Klaus Maertens..Munchen-Pasing, Haidelweg 20, and Seeshaupt (Oberbayern), An der Ach, Federal Republic of Germany. The forms reflect various renderings of the title Doctor, various processes of reanalysis of the ending of Martens as possessive or plural, and remodelling after the English personal name form Martin.
A proprietary name for: a type of heavy, usually lace-up boot or shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Now frequently in shortened (plural) forms DM(s), Doc(s) (see DM n. at D n. Additions, Doc n.4).Recorded earliest as a modifier.Forms with final -s are often understood as denoting the plural.
