Etymology: Origin uncertain.Several sources assert that this drink was invented around 1885 by Charles Alderton (1857–1941), U.S. pharmacist, at the Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas, and first sold at the pharmacy's soda fountain, although documentary evidence to confirm this beyond doubt appears to be lacking. The proprietary name Dr. Pepper was in use from around 1895; prior to this, the product was marketed as Dr. Pepper's Phos-Ferrates (and variant spellings):1890 Austin (Texas) Statesman 11 May 6/2 (advt.)
