Compare post-classical Latin alutare to prepare leather (12th cent. in a British source).Post-classical Latin alutatio is a former reading (in e.g. 16th-cent. editions) at Pliny Nat. Hist. 33. 4, where modern editions read classical Latin talūtium, denoting the superficial indication of the presence of gold under the earth.
