A region of limestone pavement or plain with little or no soil and vegetation, occurring chiefly in Sweden and Estonia in Europe and in parts of the northern United States and Canada. ΚΠ 1879 Baedeker's Norway & Sweden 361 In the centre of the island [sc. Öland] rises a bleak and arid tract of reddish limestone soil, called the Allvar, scored here and there with deep furrows, and somewhat resembling the deserts of Africa. 1922 Geografiska Annaler 4 282 On Öland and Gotland, where it has a wide distribution on the pavement of the Alvar, it is often found in a heath- or steppe-like vegetation in shallow soil. 1971 A.
