Etymology: < the names of Luis W. Alvarez (1911–88), United States physicist, and his son Walter Alvarez (b. 1940), United States geologist, who formulated the hypothesis together in 1980.

attributive. Designating the hypothesis that the mass extinctions at the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K-T) boundary were due to the environmental effects of the impact of a large asteroid or comet.The hypothesis brought together the known timing of the extinctions with the discovery that at a number of sites the clay layer at the K–T boundary contains a level of iridium that is very rare on Earth but common in asteroids (see also quot. 1994).
