Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dream n.2, catcher n.
Etymology: < dream n.2 + catcher n. With sense 2 compare Ojibwa bawaajige nagwaagan, lit. ‘dream snare’, after English; in Ojibwa, the original charms were called asabikeshiinh, inanimate equivalent of the word for ‘spider’ (perhaps with an original sense ‘spider web’).The resemblance of the following use to sense 2 is probably entirely coincidental:1969 B. A charm, of North American Indian origin, consisting of a typically wooden or leather hoop with a webbed centre of threads decorated with feathers, beads, etc. Such objects were originally hung above babies' beds by the Ojibwa as a protective charm against disease; in the second half of the 20th cent. they began to be displayed and sold more widely as ‘dreamcatchers’ and were said to give protection against bad dreams. Sometimes, bad dreams are said to be caught and entangled in the web (cf. quots. 1976, 1992); sometimes, good dreams are said to be captured for the dreamer (cf. quot. 1995).
