Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alveus.
Etymology: < classical Latin alveus hollow trough-shaped vessel, trough, bath tub, hull, hold, ship, boat, channel or bed (of a river or trench), beehive, probably related to alvus belly (see alvine adj.).
1. A trench or chasm in the sea or ocean; the deepest part of this. Obsolete.
