单词 abacot
释义

abacotn.

Brit. /ˈabəkɒt/, U.S. /ˈæbəˌkɑt/
Forms:

α. 1500s abococket.

β. 1500s abococke, 1600s abacoc.

γ. 1500s– abacot.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bycocket n., a adj.
Etymology: Apparently originally (in form abococket at α. forms; see quot. 1548) a misprint for bycocket n., incorporating a preceding indefinite article (see a adj.), unless reflecting an actual spoken variant with attraction of the indefinite article; subsequently shortened by Holinshed (compare β. forms and quot. 1577), and altered again in a later edition of Holinshed's text (compare γ. forms and quot. 1587), perhaps as a result of misreading of the form abacoc at β. forms (although this is apparently first attested later). Subsequently popularized by dictionaries ultimately informed by editions of Holinshed (chiefly in γ. forms; although compare quot. 1696).
Now rare.
= bycocket n.Originally only with reference to the bycocket worn by Henry VI (as described in quot. 1548), but by the 18th cent. apparently perceived to denote a king's bycocket more generally, and by the 19th cent. no longer restricted to royalty.
