Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Alypin.
Etymology: < German Alypin (E. Impens 1905, in Deutsche med. Wochenschr. 31 1154/2) < ancient Greek ἄλυπος painless (see alypum n.) + German -in -in suffix1.
Pharmacology. Now historical.
A synthetic compound chemically similar to stovaine, (formerly) used as a local and spinal anaesthetic.Chemical name: 1-dimethylamino-2-(dimethyl-aminoethyl)-2-butanol benzoate hydrochloride; C16H26O2N2HCl.Formerly a proprietary name in the United States and United Kingdom.
