Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin abactor.
Etymology: < classical Latin abactor cattle-thief (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius) < abact- , past participial stem of abigere to drive away, specifically to drive away cattle (see abigate v.) + -or -or suffix. Compare earlier abaction n.
A person who steals livestock, esp. herds of cattle, usually by driving the animals away. Also in extended use.
