Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Arabic dawm, dūm.
Etymology: < Arabic dawm, (colloquial: Egypt) dūm (collective noun), denoting both the tree and its fruit.The corresponding unit noun is dawma , dūma ‘single doum palm, single fruit of this tree’. In quot. 1709 via French †domi (?1704 in the passage translated; subsequently from the end of the 18th cent. as doum).
In full doum palm. A palm native to northern Africa and the Arabian peninsula, Hyphaene thebaica (family Arecaceae), having a dichotomously branched trunk and edible apple-sized fruit with a dry, spongy texture.Also called gingerbread palm.
