Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French douçaine.
Etymology: < French douçaine (late 13th cent. in Old French; now hist.) < douce , feminine of doux sweet (see douce adj.) + -aine , suffix forming nouns (see -an suffix). Compare dulcian n., and perhaps also earlier doucet n.Compare ( < French) Old Occitan dossena (late 15th cent.), Italian dolzaina (16th cent.), Spanish dulzaina (16th cent.; early 15th cent. as †duçayna ). In β. forms after French doucine (mid 15th cent.; now historical), alteration of douçaine , with suffix substitution (see -ine suffix1) after buisine buysine n.
Music. historical.
A double-reed woodwind instrument of the Medieval and Renaissance periods characterized by its soft tone.The exact nature of the instrument is not always clear in some of the quotation evidence. With quot. 1807 compare the use of dulcimer to denote a wind instrument (see dulcimer n. 2). Contemporary references to the instrument exist in French and Latin sources of the Medieval and Renaissance periods. However, English uses of the word only occur later in historical contexts.

1807 T. Johnes tr. Bertrandon de la Broquière Travels 56 Three of the musicians..executed a trio: one played on the douçaine (dulciana, probably dulcimer), the second on the lute, and the third on another instrument.
1884 Musical Standard 20 Dec. 373/1 The various precursors of the double reed instruments, such as the Douçaine, Musette, etc., doubtless played important parts.
1957 A. C. Baines Woodwind Instruments & their Hist. ix. 234 A few lines written by Tinctoris in 1488..have been taken to imply that this dulcina or douçaine was of the non-overblowing type with double reed, narrow cylindrical bore, and deep pitch for its length.
1984 New Grove Dict. Musical Instruments I. 582/2 The medieval dolzaina or douçaine may be identifiable with the shawm with a cup-shaped bell.
2013 Independent (Nexis) 1 June The instruments include a couple of the oldest fiddles on earth, flutes and the world's only douçaine.
