Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish abada; Portuguese abada, bada.
Etymology: < Spanish †abada (a1586 in the passage translated in quot. 1588) and its etymon Portuguese abada (1569), variant (with prothetic a-) of †bada (1541; > Spanish †bada (1586), Italian †bada (a1588)) < Malay bādak rhinoceros (pronounced /baːda/). Compare Batta badak, Makassarese bāda.In quot. 1598 via Dutch †abada (1596 in the passage translated; < Portuguese). With the β. forms perhaps compare -ado suffix.
Obsolete.
Originally in South and South-East Asia: a rhinoceros.
