drearyadj.

Brit. /ˈdrɪəri/, U.S. /ˈdrɪri/
Forms: Old English dreórig, Middle English drorig, Middle English–1500s dreri(e, -y, Middle English dreori ( drori), Middle English druri, drury, (Middle English drwry, Middle English drewry(e), Middle English–1700s dreeri, dreery, Scottish dreiri, (1500s driery, driry, dryrye), 1500s– dreary.
Etymology: Old English dréorig gory, bloody, sorrowful, sad, < dréor gore, falling blood, apparently < Old Germanic type *dreuzo-z; in ablaut relation to Old Saxon drôr, Old High German trôr gore, blood ( < *drauzo-z), and to Old Norse dreyri ( < drauzon-) gore, blood, whence dreyrigr gory, bloody. Generally referred to the verbal ablaut stem *dreuz-, Old English dréosan to drop, fall. To the same verbal root is ultimately referred Old High German *trûrac, Middle High German trûrec, German traurig sorrowful, sad, which is thus remotely connected in derivation with dréorig, dreary.
1. Gory, bloody. Obsolete. In Old English; the later instances are doubtful, and may belong to 2.
