Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin āmentum.
Etymology: < classical Latin āmentum (also ammentum ) thong or strap, in post-classical Latin also winter bud (1552 or earlier), in post-classical Latin and scientific Latin also catkin (1679 or earlier) < a first element of uncertain origin (see note) + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare earlier ament n.1Classical Latin āmentum may derive from agere to drive, to do, act (see act v.); alternatively it may derive from apere to fasten, attach, bind (see apt adj.). In plural form amenta after the Latin plural form.For earlier use of the post-classical Latin word in an English context, compare:1640 J. Parkinson Theatrum Botanicum ciii. 1555 That with broad Bay leaves, hath a Chachrys or Amentum, as Gaza translateth it.
Botany. Now rare.
A catkin; = ament n.1 2. In early use also: †any of various types of inflorescence thought to resemble a catkin, esp. a strobilus (cone) (obsolete).
