Amer-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: American adj.
Etymology: Shortened < American adj. Compare Americo- comb. form.Attested earliest at the end of the 19th cent. in Amerindian adj. and Amerindian n., and then in a small number of formations from the first half of the 20th cent. onwards. In quot. 1991 apparently punningly after Amerindian adj. Usually before a vowel.
Forming adjectives and nouns denoting a thing (esp. a people or language) of American origin or subject to American influence. See also Amerasian adj. and n., Amerenglish n.
