Etymology: < post-classical Latin amerciat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of amerciare (frequently from the second half of the 12th cent. in British sources) < Anglo-Norman amercier amerce v. (although this is first attested later: see note at that entry). Compare earlier amerce v. and amerciament n.
Originally and chiefly Scottish.
