Etymology: < classical Latin abaliēnāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of abaliēnāre to transfer (property) legally to another, to remove, take away, to turn away, alienate from, to detach, abstract, to deaden, numb < ab- ab- prefix + aliēnāre alienate v.
1. transitive. To estrange or alienate in feeling; to cause to feel removed or distant. Also: to remove, distance. Frequently with from. Now rare.
