Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin dulcamara.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin dulcamara bittersweet (1573 or earlier; 1528 or earlier as amare dulcis , 1552 as amara dulcis ) < classical Latin dulcis sweet (see dulce adj.) + amāra , feminine of amārus bitter (see amarous adj.). Compare slightly earlier bittersweet n. 4a, and also dulcoamare adj.
The perennial plant bittersweet or woody nightshade, Solanum dulcamara (now rare); an extract or medicinal preparation of this plant, typically made from its shoots (now used chiefly in homeopathy).
