Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: dulcamara n., -ine suffix5.
Etymology: Originally < dulcamara n. + -ine suffix5, after French dulcamarine (1826 or earlier; attributed to E. Desfosses, who however appears to have called the substance dulcarine (1821)). The β. forms show remodelling of the ending after -in suffix1.Compare German Dulcamarin (1829 or earlier; < French).
Chemistry.
A bitter yellow amorphous compound present in bittersweet or woody nightshade, Solanum dulcamara.Dulcamarin is a glucoside having the formula C22H34O10.
