Etymology: Apparently an alteration of dulcian n. (although this is first attested slightly later), after borrowings from Latin or Romance which end in -a (compare -a suffix¹).Compare the Italian and Spanish parallels cited at douçaine n. (although these only denote a musical instrument, not an organ stop), and also ( < English) Dutch dulciana (1786 or earlier). Perhaps compare also post-classical Latin dulciana (14th cent.), in uncertain sense, perhaps denoting a kind of song or a type of musical instrument.
