Etymology: < classical Latin dulciārius concerned with confectionery, in post-classical Latin also as noun in sense ‘confectioner’ (2nd or 3rd cent.) < dulcis sweet (see dulce adj.; compare classical Latin dulcia sweets (4th cent.)) + -ārius -ary suffix1.
Obsolete. rare.
1. A sweetening substance; a sweetener. Also figurative.
