Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish abalón, avalón, aulón.
Etymology: < American Spanish (California) abalón, abulón, (rare) avalón, †aulón (1846 or earlier; now also used in Spanish more widely, chiefly in form abulón) < Rumsen awlun red abalone.Rumsen is a Costanoan language of northern California. The English pronunciation (with final -e pronounced) suggests that the form abalone may have arisen as an inferred singular of the plural form abalones ( < Spanish (plural) abalones).

An edible gastropod mollusc of the genus Haliotis, typically found in warm seas, having a shallow ear-shaped shell lined with mother-of-pearl and pierced with a line of respiratory holes; an ormer; (also) the shell of this. Also called sea ear, ear shell.
