Brit. /ˈiːɡlᵻt/, U.S. /ˈiɡlət/
Forms: 1500s eaglette, 1500s– eaglet, 1600s eaglett, 1600s eglet; Scottish pre-1700 aiglettes (plural).
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on French lexical items. Etymons: eagle n., -et suffix1.
Etymology: < eagle n. + -et suffix1, perhaps after Middle French aiglette (French aiglette) heraldic representation of an eagle (late 13th cent. in Old French) and perhaps also aiglet young eagle (first quarter of the 13th cent. in an isolated attestation in Old French, subsequently in a small number of attestations c1400 and in the late 16th cent.).Quot. c1494 is from a translation of an unpublished French manuscript source in the College of Arms.
1. Heraldry. A representation of an eagle borne as a charge. The term eaglet, instead of eagle, is typically used when the field contains two or more such charges (see quot. 1904).
