Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French allumeuse.
Etymology: < French allumeuse (1891 in this sense; 1861 in sense ‘prostitute who stands outside a brothel, attempting to entice customers into entering it’) < allumer to light up (see allumine v.) + -euse -euse suffix.Not fully naturalized in English.
A woman who is alluring but sexually elusive; a flirt, coquette (usually with some degree of sophistication implied).
