单词 allumine
释义

alluminev.

Brit. /əˈl(j)uːmɪn/, U.S. /əˈlumən/
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: illumine v.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of illumine v. after Middle French alumer, Middle French, French allumer to set (something) alight, to inflame (something) (c1100 in Old French; < post-classical Latin adluminare , alluminare to set light to, light up (8th cent.) < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + lūmināre luminate v.). Compare Middle French alluminer , aluminer to set (something) alight, to inflame (something) (14th cent.; obsolete after late 16th cent.), probably an alteration (after illuminer illumine v., enluminer enlumine v., or directly after classical Latin lūmin- , lūmen light: see lumen n.) of allumer , alumer . Middle French aluminer ‘to enlighten (a person), to restore sight to (a person)’ is attested in the 14th cent., and is an alteration (with prefix substitution: compare a- prefix5) of enluminer enlumine v. Compare earlier illuminate v., illumine v., and later alluminate v. Compare also earlier alluminor n.Compare also Old Occitan alumnar (beginning of the 12th cent.; also alumenar (c1180)), (with popular phonological development) alumar (13th cent.), Catalan aluminar (13th cent.; also alumenar ), allumar (15th cent.; < llum light (14th cent.; < classical Latin lūmin- , lūmen light: see lumen n.)), Spanish alumbrar (c1200 as †allumbrar ; < lumbre light (c1200; < classical Latin lūmin- , lūmen light: see lumen n.)), Portuguese alumiar (13th cent.; also †alumear), (rare) aluminar (1562; < Latin), Italian alluminare to enlighten (beginning of the 13th cent.), allumare to enlighten, to inflame (a1250; < French).
transitive. To light up, enlighten, illuminate; (also) to set alight. Cf. illuminate v.
