Etymology: Originally (i) < Ottoman Turkish dönüm (dūnum in Arabic script; modern Turkish dönüm ) < dönmek to turn (dūnmak in Arabic script; modern Turkish dönmek ); the Turkish noun is perhaps modelled on modern Greek στρέμμα quarter of an acre (already in ancient Greek in sense ‘wrench, strain, sprain’ < στρέϕειν to twist, turn: see strophe n.). In later use reborrowed partly < (ii) modern Hebrew dūnām and its etymon (iii) Arabic dūnum ( < Ottoman Turkish dūnum ), and partly (iv) < modern Turkish dönüm (compare α. forms).Both Hebrew dūnām and Arabic dūnum are pronounced with stress on the first syllable and with both vowels short; the forms given above for both languages are standard transliterations.

A measure of land area used in the Ottoman Empire and in some countries formerly part of it, varying in size typically between about 900 and 1,300 square metres.In recent use in some places, e.g. Israel, standardized at 1,000 square metres (0.1 hectare, approx. 0.25 acre).
