Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans dwaal.
Etymology: < Afrikaans dwaal (noun), in the same sense (1954 or earlier) < dwaal (verb) to roam, wander, rove, to go astray < Dutch dwalen (see dwele v.).
South African.
A dreamy, dazed, or absent-minded state. Frequently in in a dwaal and variants.
