Etymology: Shortened < scientific Latin Entamoeba coli, species name (F. Schaudinn 1903, in Arbeiten aus dem Kaiserlichen Gesundheitsamte 19 564) < Entamoeba entamœba n. + coli , specific epithet, genitive of classical Latin colon (see colon n.1).
Microbiology.
The non-pathogenic endoparasitic amoeba Entamoeba coli, found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and certain other animals. Cf. coli n.

Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Latin Escherichia coli.
Etymology: Shortened < scientific Latin Escherichia coli, species name < Escherichia , genus name (A. Castellani & A. J. Chalmers Man. Trop. Med. (ed. 3, 1919) 941; < the name of Theodor Escherich (1857–1911), German physician, who isolated the type species of the genus in 1885 + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1) + coli , specific epithet (see coli n.). Compare earlier coli n.
Bacteriology.
The Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, which forms a major part of the normal flora of the intestinal tract of humans and many other vertebrates, but also has pathogenic strains that cause (chiefly) urinary tract infections and various forms of enteritis, including a severe type of food poisoning. Also (in extended use): disease (esp. food poisoning) caused by this organism. Cf. coli n.In scientific use the correct form is E. coli, in italics.
