Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: a- prefix1, bar v.
Etymology: < a- prefix1 + bar v. N.E.D. (1884) also records an isolated Anglo-Norman form abarre , but this reflects a misreading of abatre abate v.1 in the following passage: 1628 tr. T. Littleton in E. Coke 1st Pt. Inst. Lawes Eng. f. 248v Ceo ne abat[er]a my mon br[ef], mes mo[n] br[ef]..estoyera en sa force: this shall not abate my Writ, but my writ..shall stand in his force.
Obsolete.
transitive. To bar, debar. Chiefly with from.archaic in quot. 1825.
