Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin abartia.
Etymology: Apparently < post-classical Latin abartia insatiableness (1677 or earlier; compare quot. 1677 at abarstic adj.), apparently < Byzantine Greek ἀβαρτία insatiableness (apparently only in Hesychius) < ἄβαρτος insatiable (apparently only in Hesychius; of uncertain origin, in the 18th cent. apparently perceived to be related to ancient Greek ἄρτος bread: see artotyrite n.) + -ια -ia suffix1. Compare earlier abarstic adj.Post-classical Latin abartia is also cited slightly later in another bilingual dictionary, where it is glossed in French as faim canine, insatiabilité, voracité (Boudot 1745).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
