Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch dubbeltje.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < South African Dutch dubbeltje (1795 or earlier; Afrikaans dubbeltjie ), of uncertain origin; probably < Dutch dubbel double (see double adj.1), so called on account of the two-four construction of the thorns, or perhaps < Dutch duiveltje little devil ( < duivel devil n.; compare β. forms), so called on account of the supposed resemblance of the fruit to a horned devil; and partly (in sense 2) < Dutch dubbeltje double stiver, double penny (see doublejee n.). With sense 2 compare earlier doublejee n.
South African.
1. One of several South African weeds, esp. Tribulus terrestris or Emex australis; also the spiny, angular burr of any of these weeds.Also more fully dubbeltjiedoring /ˈdœvəlcɪˌdɒrəŋ/ and (formerly) dubbeltje doorn.
