单词 dunnock
释义

dunnockn.

Brit. /ˈdʌnək/, U.S. /ˈdənək/
Forms: late Middle English donek, late Middle English dunoke, 1500s dunock, 1600s dunneck, 1700s– dunnock; English regional 1800s dummic (Somerset), 1800s dunneck (Yorkshire), 1800s dunnic (Somerset), 1800s– dinnick (Devon, in sense 2), 1800s– dunnick (southern).
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: dun adj., -ock suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < dun adj. + -ock suffix, so called on account of the dusky brown colour of its plumage. Compare earlier pinnock n.1 (a).Earlier currency may be implied by place names, as e.g. Donekerigge , Devon (1269; now Dundridge), Dunnockschae , Lancashire (1296; now Dunnockshaw). It is unclear whether the late Middle English form dune not (see the variant reading in quot. 1483) is a transmission error for this word (with final c miscopied as t ) or an isolated example of a similar formation with (or an alteration after) -ot suffix.
1. A small Eurasian passerine bird, Prunella modularis, which is light brown with darker streaks and a grey head and breast; cf. accentor n. 2a.Also called hedge sparrow. The name ‘dunnock’ was regarded as non-scientific until the mid 20th-cent., when it was adopted by British ornithologists in preference to ‘hedge sparrow’.
