Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: allyl n., -in suffix1.
Etymology: < allyl n. + -in suffix1, perhaps after either German Allylin (1860 or earlier) or French allyline (1864 or earlier).
Chemistry. Now rare.
A viscous liquid formed by heating glycerol with oxalic acid.Allylin (also called monoallylin) is allyloxyglycerol; CH2=CHCH2OCH2CH(OH)CH2OH. Diallylin and triallylin may be formed if the second and third OH groups in the glycerol component are substituted with allyl radicals.
