Etymology: < ear n.1 + ache n.1 Compare the following earlier instance of eares ache , perhaps showing the genitive of ear n.1 + ache n.1, although the construction is syntactically opaque, and may rather show ache v.:1597 W. Langham Garden of Health 70 Eares ache, put in the iuice with oyle of Roses.

1878 Notes & Queries 22 June 488/1 The popular name for field poppies, as well as cultivated ones, in this district [sc. Worksop] is ‘ear-aches’... It is said that if they are gathered and put to the ear a violent attack of ear-ache will be the result... In some parts of Derbyshire poppies are called ‘ear-aches’.
